Hoops In-Schools

Target Settings

The CRBF Hoops In-Schools Programme’s target setting are higher deprivation schools and communities through Canterbury & Tasman.

Target Population

Communities and schools in higher deprivation areas with a passion for physical activity and a potential for growth in participation of the sport within that school or community. Where a new hoop will be impactful for the tamariki and rangatahi and help build relationships and healthy habits in all areas of their life.  An important aspect for hoops that are installed in schools is that the school agrees to allow the hoop to be available for the community during after school time.

Programme Outline & Vision

The CRBF identify schools and community groups to install a hoop in through various criteria:

  • The school/community is already involved in CRBF run programmes and the need for a new hoop to continue to grow participation and physical activity within that school or community is identified.
  • Through collaborative partnerships with Clubs, Academies, Youth/Community Organisations and Regional/National Sporting Bodies.

With increased funding we aim to install 10 hoops in higher deprivation schools & communities over the next 12 months throughout Canterbury & Tasman.

The CRBF in partnership with the Rams and support from Christ's College & Home to be able to install a set of basketball hoops has helped give our children a great area to practice their skills and develop what they have learned!"

Jo Barlow

Principal - St James School

The CRBF in partnership with the Canterbury Rams, Home, Christ's College & St James are excited to be able invest in the future and growth of physical activity and basketball at St James with the installation of a new basketball hoop system. Replacing the previously portable hoops, which were becoming unfit for purpose due to the growing popularity of the sport within St James.

The CRBF approached Christ’s College and Home who fully supported the idea. With Christ’s College students supporting hoop installation and Home along with some of their build partners donating the installation.

St James Principal Jo Barlow commented on the initiative saying “The CRBF in partnership with the Rams and support from Christ College & Home to be able to install a set of basketball hoops has helped give our children a great area to practice their skills and develop what they have learned!”

We are looking forward to upcoming projects at Linwood Ave School with the installation of new hoops.  With increased funding we aim to install 10 hoops in higher deprivation schools & communities over the next 12 months throughout Canterbury, Tasman & the wider South Island region.
